 Einer der phantasievollsten Betrugsversuche. Der Schotte Gregor MacGregor bereiste Südamerika und kam 1820 an die Mosquitoküste, die heute zu Nicaragua und Honduras gehört. Dort lernte er die Mosquito-Indianer kennen, denen er acht Millionen Acres Landrechte abschwatzen konnte. 1822 ließ er dann seine Landrechte in London registrieren. Kurze Zeit darauf begann er, in verschiedenen Varianten Anleihen des Staats Poyais zu platzieren. Er selbst bezeichnete sich als Häuptling des Mosquito-Volkes. 1845 starb MacGregor in Venezuela und wurde dort mit militärischen Ehren in der Kathedrale von Caracas beigesetzt.

 One of the most creative frauds. Gregor MacGregor travelled in Latin America and came in 1820 to Mosquito Shore and Nation - today parts of Nicaragua and Honduras. He bought rights for eight million acres of land. 1822 MacGregor registered his land grants in London. Shortly after this he began to sell various kinds of Bonds of the state of Poyais. MacGregor said he is the Chieftain of the Mosquito Shore and Nation. In 1845 MacGregor tied in Venezuela. He was buried with military honour in the Cathedral of Caracas.
